Veteran journalist Ken Allen, who served The Gleaner for greater than 60 years, died yesterday at College Hospital of the West Indies after an extended sickness. He was 87.

Allen was appointed editor-in-chief of The Gleaner in 1992 and retired two years later. Nevertheless, he continued to serve the newspaper as opinion pages editor.

Yesterday, The Gleaner Normal Supervisor Garfield Grandison described Allen as among the finest journalists from Jamaica and the Caribbean.

“He contributed tremendously to the event and development of the occupation. He supplied coaching and steerage to many. He served journalism and Jamaica effectively. We at The Gleaner will miss him however will all the time keep in mind his excellent, extremely skilled contribution to media in Jamaica and the area,” Grandison, a former editor-in-chief of The Gleaner, advised the Jamaica Observer.

Observer Govt Editor – Publications Vernon Davidson agreed, saying that Allen was simply one of many best journalists he had labored with.

“Ken Allen possessed glorious enhancing abilities and will flip a uninteresting story into learn,” mentioned Davidson, who was a sub-editor at The Gleaner within the mid-Eighties.

“I admired his work ethic and appreciated his willingness to share his information and expertise.”

Allen was invested with the Order of Distinction, Commander Class (CD) in 1998, and in 2002 the Press Affiliation of Jamaica honoured him for his excellent service to journalism.
