At least 20 dead left by Tropical Storm Laura in HaitiPort-au-Prince, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) At least 20 people have died and five are missing since Tropical Storm Laura passed through Haiti, according to the latest partial assessment by the Civil Defense released on Tuesday.
Officials registered deaths in the Southeast, West and South departments, including a nine-month-old baby, an eight-year-old boy, as well as 10 women and eight men.

The agency added that two children and three adults are missing in the West and Southeast regions, two of the most affected by the weather phenomenon. Four people have also been reported injured.

About 200 families were affected in Nippes department, about 150 km southwest of Port-au-Prince. The authorities said the southern coastal area was inaccessible after four bridges linking the communes of Roche-à-Bateau, Coteaux and Chardonnières were affected.

It also recorded severe damage to several stretches of road, while the stretch linking the northern communes of La Victoire and Pignon is still impassable, the Civil Defence detailed.

The balance also indicated that 15 houses were destroyed, another 135 were damaged, and 447 homes were flooded. The day before, the Artibonite River continued to rise, while the authorities continue with partial assessments and plan new reconnaissance flights.
