Black Leopards 3-2 Maritzburg United: PSL highlights and results

The Limpopo outfit scored two quick first-half goals, which were cancelled out before the break by Eric Tinkler’s men.

An uncharacteristic error from the usually reliable Richard Ofori handed Leopards the lead on a platter, with last season’s top goal scorer Mwape Musonda pouncing as the Ghanaian failed to control the ball from a cross.

The Zambian marksman was on hand to gather the rebound, needing a single touch to direct the ball to the back of the net.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane had an opportunity to draw level for Maritzburg, as he combined well with Thabiso Kutumela, but his flick lacked the power to head goalward.

The visitors were left to rue that missed chance immediately, as Ofori was left vulnerable in the counter-attack with Musonda, who forced a block from the shot-stopper, only for Lifa Hlongwane to tap the ball into the net for the second, his first of the season.

Lidoda Duvha’s two-goal lead lasted just seconds, with Keegan Buchanan halving the deficit for Maritzburg with a superbly taken free-kick.

It was not long until things were back level again, as Mxolisi Kunene punished lax defending from the Limpopo outfit with a fine strike.

Five minutes in the second half is all it took for Leopards to restore their advantage, this time through academy graduate Thiklas Thutlwa, who was making his first-team debut on the day.

The hosts then control the contest, and there was a lenthy lull in the middle period of the second half.

This was until Judas Moseamedi almost disturbed the quiet by bagging an equaliser, but his effort in the 86th minute hit the side-netting.

A foul close to the Leopards box in injury time gave Buchanan another opportunity to convert from the set-piece, but could not curl his effort back this time.

That proved to be the last significant action of the day, as the bottom-feeders held on to grab a crucial three points. This puts them level on points with 15th-placed Polokwane City ahead of their visit to Golden Arrows on Friday.

Maritzburg United, on the other hand, remain sixth in the PSL standings, and have a tough task ahead, hosting defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns in their next fixture. Protection Status
