PSL matches to observe a moment of silence for COVID-19 casualties

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed that a moment of silence will be observed ahead of kickoff for those who lost their lives to the deadly COVID-19 virus.

Action resumes after a four-month suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic on Saturday afternoon with Baroka FC taking on Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns facing Bidvest Wits in the Nedbank semi-final round.

South Africa has been devastatingly hit by the virus that has affected the entire globe. A total of 545 467 people have tested positive for the virus in the country while 9 909 people have sadly lost their lives.

PSL to observe a moment of silence and applause

The PSL released a statement on Saturday morning confirming that a moment of silence will be observed for those who have lost their lives to the virus while a moment of applause will take place for those frontline workers and medics who are fighting the virus.

“The Premier Soccer League will observe a moment of silence for the people who have lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic.” a statement read.

“This will be followed by applause from players for the brave frontline workers who are working tirelessly on a daily basis to save lives. The league recognizes their heroic efforts, working long hours to save lives in our hospitals, clinics and other health care facilities.”

Moment of silence for every opening week fixture

“The league wishes to convey heartfelt condolences to the families of the people who have lost their lives to COVID-19.”

“This will be observed at all Nedbank Cup, GladAfrica Championship and Absa Premiership matches this weekend and next week.”

Football returns to South Africa today, with the Nedbank Cup semifinal fixtures marking the return of Premier Soccer League (PSL) action.
