Global COVID-19 cases have surpassed 18 million

BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW YORK — Global COVID-19 cases have surpassed 18 million on Sunday, reaching 18,002,567 as of 9:34 p.m. local time (0134 GMT Monday), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

A total of 687,930 people worldwide have died from the disease, the data showed.

The United States has suffered the most from the pandemic, with 4,665,932 cases and 154,841 fatalities, followed by Brazil with 2,733,677 cases and 94,104 deaths, the tally showed.

OSLO — The Norwegian authorities are tracing passengers from recent Arctic voyages after at least 40 crew and passengers from a luxury cruise liner have tested positive for COVID-19, the country’s public health department said on Sunday.

All 158 crew members from the MS Roald Amundsen have been tested after 36 of them and four passengers were diagnosed with the disease on Friday, Hurtigruten, the owner of the ship, currently docked at the port of Tromsoe, said in a statement released on Saturday.

BOGOTA — Colombia’s Ministry of Health on Sunday reported a total of 317,651 cases of COVID-19, with 139,037 cases considered active.

The death toll rose to 10,650 after 320 more patients died from the disease in the previous day.

LIMA — Peru on Sunday reported 428,850 cases of COVID-19 after 3,657 new cases of infection were detected in the previous day.

The country’s COVID-19 death toll rose to 19,614, according to the Health Ministry.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil on Sunday recorded 541 new deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the national death toll to 94,104, according to the country’s health ministry.

Meanwhile, tests have detected 25,800 new infections, taking the total caseload to 2,733,677, said the ministry.

Brazil has become the hardest hit country in Latin America and the second-worst hit worldwide, second only to the United States in deaths and total number of COVID-19 infections.

SANTO DOMINGO — The Dominican Republic on Sunday said a total of 72,243 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus and 1,178 have died from the disease.

The previous day saw 828 new cases of infection and eight more fatalities, the Public Health Ministry said.
