Fourth Meeting of Haiti-DR Private Sector Leaders

July 29, 2020
Joint Statement

On July 29, private sector representatives from Haiti and the Dominican Republic met virtually with the State Department to further discussions on developing a more secure and prosperous border for both nations.  This was the fourth such meeting convened by the U. S. government since June 2019, and included the participation of both U.S. Ambassadors, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Haiti, Canada, and the Caribbean, and other State Department officials.   European Union and the Inter-American Development Bank representatives provided an overview of their cross-border programs in the region.  The discussion focused on the importance of both countries working together to advance initiatives to increase transparency, security, fight and eliminate contraband, and to formalize trade along the Dominican Republic-Haiti border.  The group also discussed the challenges associated with COVID-19, and reaffirmed their commitment to transform the shared border into an engine for economic prosperity for the Haitian and Dominican people.
