Bidvest Wits promote eight youngsters to first team ahead of restart

Bidvest Wits have promoted eight members of their reserve team to the senior side ahead of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) restart.

The one-time league champions will be one of the first teams on show when action resumes on 8 August, as they take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the second Nedbank Cup semifinal at Orlando Stadium.

Having promoted Rowan Human and Solly Khunyedi to the first team earlier in the season, the Clever Boys revealed on Friday that another eight youngsters have been training with the seniors.

The club said it did so taking the number of fixtures to be played within a short space of time.

“With the aim of finishing the top-flight season on a high and taking the amount of fixtures in quick succession into consideration, head coach Gavin Hunt has rewarded eight academy players with a chance at first team football.”

The players who have been promoted to the first team include highly-rated defender Keenan Phillips, who has been one of the standout players for the club in the reserve league.

Another one is Kabelo Makola who, like Phillips, has represented South Africa at youth level.

Final push

The youngsters will be looking to grab whatever opportunity that comes along, with the club in its last month or so of existence after its owners sold to those of Tshakuma Tsha Mandzivhandila.

The deal entered into by the two clubs will see a large number of Wits squad members turn out for the Limpopo outfit next season.

Wits have nine league matches remaining and are within a mathematical shot of clinching their second league title.

Their first league title is on Wednesday, 12 August against log leaders Kaizer Chiefs at Orlando Stadium.
