EU Funds Campaign to Eradicate Mosquito-Borne Diseases in the Caribbean

Published

on

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Wednesday
January 15, 2020 –
The European Union has provided the Caribbean Public
Health Agency (CARPHA) with a grant of €4.1 million (US$4.5 million) to
continue supporting efforts to combat mosquito borne diseases in the Caribbean.

The
assistance will be channelled through a four-year health strengthening
programme designed to further improve the prevention, detection and control of
outbreaks of mosquito borne diseases such as Zika and dengue.

The
project will involve activities to strengthen vector control programmes in
CARPHA member states, in addition to the institutional capacity for detection,
as well as regional coordination in response to possible related infectious
outbreaks.

CARPHA is responsible for coordinating public health policy and responses to public health issues in CARICOM Member States and has recently completed a successful first phase of a similar EU-funded programme which focused on the Zika outbreak, at a cost of €700 000 (US$770,000).

Executive Director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) Dr Joy St John (left) and EU Ambassador Daniela Tramacere.

“The
EU remains committed to assisting the region with health security especially
when mosquito borne diseases such as Zika and dengue threaten both the health
of the regional population and general productivity, as well as the important
tourism sector,” EU Ambassador Daniela Tramacere said. “This grant will ensure
that CARPHA together with its member states can respond effectively to the
potential threat that these diseases pose.”

Executive
Director of CARPHA Dr Joy St John, said she was pleased the agency was implementing
“this very important initiative” which will allow CARPHA to address many of the
elements of capacity building that the Caribbean needs, such as laboratory
strengthening, training in integrated vector management, insecticide resistance
testing and behaviour change interventions.

“In light of current outbreaks of dengue, this is a boost to CARPHA’s support to countries at this time,” she said.

SKIP MARLEY RELEASES NEW MUSIC VIDEO FOR SINGLE “SLOW DOWN” WITH H.E.R.,
VIA TUFF GONG/ISLAND RECORDS FROM HIGHLY ANTICIPATED FORTHCOMING PROJECT

“Bob Marley’s grandson living up to his lineage while finding new ways to push the boundaries of the genre….” – Rolling Stone

“a proper introduction into a new Marley generation” – FADER

“The grandson of Bob Marley keeps the legacy thriving with
his tantalizing single”- VIBE

Skip Marley, the Island Records reggae prodigy, releases the official music video for his buzzing new single “Slow Down” with two-time 2019 Grammy© Award-winning artist H.E.R. via Tuff Gong/Island Records. “Slow Down” recently peaked at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Digital Sales chart and is Skip’s fastest streaming song to date. Along with the video launch is a broadcast premiere on BET Jams, BET Soul, MTV Live, mtvU and the Viacom billboard in Times Square, New York. As Jamaican music legend Bob Marley’s 75th birthday celebrations kick off, Skip carries on as the newest rising star in the family tradition of his grandfather — a foundational icon in the reggae, roots, rock, soul, and hip-hop saga of Island Records.

The amazing chemistry between Skip and H.E.R. is on full display in their fiery new music video for “Slow Down.” Taking place in New York City, the video is an ode to black love, opening in a retro diner when an intrigued Skip catches the eyes of H.E.R. Things heat up when the two take over the dance floor at a vibey party in an uptown brownstone. The video embodies the spontaneous and unique nature of a “NYC” kind of love. Watch the music video for “Slow Down” directed by Lacey Duke below.

ABOUT SKIP MARLEY:

“I don’t really think about how I want to be perceived by people. They have their own projections. I just want them to see me as a fighter for good. A love warrior.” 23-year old Skip Marley often speaks in this way – rare combination of serious and cool. Jamaica-born and Florida-based, Skip is mysterious and chill, but deeply connected to his craft and refreshingly self-assured. He is authentic in a way most musicians these days could never claim to be; when he says he’s never thought about how people perceive him, it’s without any pretense or irony.

His music follows suit, a reggae-hybrid that effortlessly blends eras, genres, and styles, while showing off Skip’s impeccable musicianship and poetic lyricism. His natural talent comes as no surprise – music is quite literally in his blood; he is the grandson of reggae icon Bob Marley. Skip’s songs pay homage to the deep and widespread legacy of the Marley family, which includes his uncles, reggae greats Ziggy, Damian and Stephen; and his aunt, singer Marcia Griffiths of the renowned I Three female vocal trio, with Skip’s grandmother Rita Marley.

“I want to spread my music to the people and help them unify,” he says. “I want people to take away a message of love, of looking at the way you are living and thinking where we can work to be or better and feel better. Whatever they’re feeling, I want them to be able to turn up my music and think, relax, and get good vibes.” It’s a radical idea maybe, but an essential one.

ABOUT H.E.R.

Enigmatic singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist H.E.R. has established herself as one of modern R&B’s most fascinating new talents. With two sold-out headlining tours and over 2 billion streams for her two remarkable EPs – H.E.R. and I Used To Know Her, the 22 year-old won two Grammy Awards this year for Best R&B Album (H.E.R.) and Best R&B Performance (“Best Part” featuring Daniel Caesar).

Her latest release, I Used To Know Her, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart, while fan favorites “Focus,” and “Best Part” earned the #1 slot on the Billboard Adult R&B Songs Airplay chart and Urban Adult Contemporary chart, respectively. In September 2019, H.E.R. and producer partner Live Nation Urban held the first-ever Lights On Festival, which sold out within minutes of going on-sale, at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, CA. Notably the first female owned and curated R&B festival in decades, the powerhouse lineup included H.E.R., Jhené Aiko, Daniel Caesar, Summer Walker, Ari Lennox, Lucky Daye and more.
