Rapper Rich Brian Gets Vulnerable About His Asian Identity, Immigration Story

Rapper Rich Brian is a child of the internet.

The Indonesian-born rapper taught himself English through YouTube, mastered dry web humor on Twitter, and discovered the alluring art of hip-hop while in front of his computer screen, NBC News reported. But perhaps most significantly, the internet prompted his fascination with American culture — a world, he says, he felt drawn to and virtually connected with as he spent a large chunk of his teen years immersed in all things American.

Roughly two years after moving stateside, the artist just concluded “The Sailor” tour Monday to promote his sophomore album of the same name. The new music is steeped in the weighty themes of Asian identity and the immigrant experience and is, in part, his assessment of his own journey to America. It’s also an ode to those who came before him.

Kate Middleton Candidly Discusses Her Parenting Struggles in Rare Interview – NBC4 Washington

This royal is getting candid about parenthood. Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, opened up about her pregnancies and motherhood journey in a new episode of the “Happy Mum, Happy Baby” podcast, which dropped Saturday, Feb. 15.

In the nearly 35-minute conversation, the former Kate Middleton spoke to host Giovanna Fletcher about a range of topics, including parenting guilt, difficulties during pregnancy, why she did hypnobirthing and more.

While the duchess has come to realize “it’s not totally my responsibility to do everything,” she said that she “absolutely” experiences mom guilt “all the time.” “I think anyone who doesn’t, as a mother, is actually lying,” she said with a laugh.

Through talking to other mothers, midwives and even scientists, the duchess — who’s the mother to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — has learned a ton, including how a mother’s emotional well-being, not just her physical health, can impact a baby’s development.

“What I’ve learned over the last few years, it’s so fascinating,” the 38-year-old said. “And I definitely would have done things differently, even during my pregnancy, than I would’ve done now knowing the importance of the early years.”

That emphasis on the early years is the focus of her U.K.-wide survey called “5 Big Questions on the Under Fives,” which she promoted on the podcast. It’s an anonymous survey which she hopes will start a larger conversation about parenting challenges to find solutions and ensure a better future for the next generation.

Reflecting on her own three pregnancies, the duchess shared, “I got very bad morning sickness, so I’m not the happiest of pregnant people.” Though she acknowledged that “a lot of people have it far worse,” it was still “definitely a challenge” for her and her loved ones, since she felt “utterly rotten.”

She’s not exaggerating either — she suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, which according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “occurs when there is severe, persistent nausea and vomiting during pregnancy — more extreme than ‘morning sickness.'” The condition can lead to weight loss and dehydration.

It’s because of the condition that she opted for hypnobirthing, explaining, “It was through hyperemesis that I really realized the power of the mind over the body, because I really had to try everything and everything to try to help me through it.” According to, hypnobirthing is “is a childbirth education course that emphasizes natural childbirth and teaches self-hypnosis techniques to combat fear and pain during labor.”

Expanding on her experience, the duchess clarified, “There’s levels of it. I’m not going to say that William was standing there, sort of chanting sweet nothings at me. He definitely wasn’t… It was just something I wanted to do for myself. I saw the power of it.”

Whether meditation or deep breathing, she was able to use hypnobirthing techniques when she felt sick. “I realized that this was something that I could take control of, I suppose, during labor. It was hugely powerful,” she added. Because her pregnancies were so difficult, she also said, “I actually quite liked labor,” since an end was in sight.

Despite any difficulties along the way, the former Kate Middleton gushed about how “extraordinary” the human body is and how “amazing” it was the first time she held baby George, who she actually didn’t know was going to be a boy. “It was a surprise,” she said, recalling the “pure joy” on husband Prince William’s face.

That bliss was soon met with stress, though. The duchess said it was “slightly terrifying” that soon after giving birth, she had to go do the royal photo call on the hospital steps. “Everyone had been so supportive. Both William and I were really conscious that this was sort of something that everyone was excited about and we’re hugely grateful for the support that the public has shown us.” While they wanted to share that joy with the world, that excitement was “coupled with a newborn baby and inexperienced parents and the uncertainty about what that held.”

The duchess described that July 2013 day as “a bit of a blur” with “mixed emotions.” She stayed in the hospital overnight and thunderstorms prevented her from sleeping well. “I was keen to just get home, because for me… I had all the memories of being in the hospital because of being sick, so it wasn’t the place I wanted to hang around in, so I was really desperate to get home and get back to normality,” she said.

She said she “totally underestimated the impact and the change it had on our lives from that moment” on. Ultimately, they were just figuring things out as they went along, and when host Fletcher praised how seamlessly William put baby George in the car for the first time, the duchess said, “He probably didn’t think so at the time.” She recalled amidst laughs, “We’d even tried to practice with a little baby, like a little doll… but you know, it just never works out the way you planned it, so it was quite hard to do that on the world’s stage.”

No matter how many experts or parents she has spoken to, the duchess made sure to mention: “No pregnancy is the same. No birth is the same.” The idea that parents put pressure on themselves to have things play out a certain way, leading to disappointment and guilt, is another topic they discussed.

When it comes to combating parenting pressures, simplicity is key. “Life now is so busy, so distracting, and actually sometimes the simple things like watching a fire on a really rainy day provide such enjoyment,” said the duchess, who recalled enjoying easy activities, like going for walks with her parents, as a kid.

“It’s the simple things that really make a difference,” she said. “It’s spending quality time with your children. It’s not whether you’ve done every single drop-off and every single pick-up, but actually it’s those quality moments that you spend with your child where you’re actually properly listening to them.” The duchess tries to do exactly that with George, Charlotte and Louis.

At the end of the day, she knows there’s power in people coming together.

“No matter what walk of life you’ve come from, there’s so many things that really unify parents and families in their struggles, but also in their aspirations too,” she said. Through the podcast and her survey, the duchess is doing her best to listen to other parents and conquer any challenges together.

All-Star Weekend, as Expected, Was About Honoring Kobe – NBC4 Washington

It has become one of the NBA’s most revered traditions: On the morning of the NBA All-Star Game, the league pays tribute to retired players with what is called the Legends Brunch. It brings together about 3,000 guests, and every year a recent retiree with ties to the game’s host city is honored.

When the game was in Los Angeles two years ago, the NBA wanted to honor Kobe Bryant.

He declined. He couldn’t attend. His reason: his daughter Gianna Bryant had a game that morning.

“That said, to us, everything about his priorities,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Sunday as he recalled that conversation with Bryant.

After a tragic helicopter crash took the lives of Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others, they two were honored in a private funeral before a public memorial, still to come. Kim Baldonado reports for the NBC4 News at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020.

This All-Star weekend was Michael Jordan’s longtime home of Chicago, highlighted by a game where LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo served as captains — but it was, predictably and understandably, overshadowed by the mourning of Bryant.

Jennifer Hudson, wearing the Lakers’ deep purple, performed a pregame tribute to Bryant and sang “For All We Know.” Players on James’ team wore Gianna’s No. 2 on their jerseys and players on Antetokounmpo’s team wore Kobe’s No. 24 on theirs. And all players wore a patch with nine stars, one for each victim of the crash.

Common, in his pregame tribute to Chicago, also paid homage to Bryant, saying that “even in the darkest times, you’ll feel Kobe’s light.”

Everyone at the All-Star Game on Sunday got a 24-page tribute published by Sports Illustrated devoted to Bryant’s career. On the last page of text, just before the back cover, was a quote from Jordan: “I loved Kobe — he was like a little brother to me,” it began. Next to that quote was a photo, Bryant guarding Jordan in 1997, sticking his tongue out much in the same way that the Bulls’ guard often did.

One caller even speculated with the dispatcher if the pilot faced disorientation due to the fog. Beverly White reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2020.

And when the night was over, Kawhi Leonard was the first recipient of the Kobe Bryant MVP Award, given to the player voted as the biggest star of the All-Star Game — a trophy that Bryant hoisted four times.

It’s been three weeks now since Bryant, 13-year-old Gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash in Southern California.

And the mourning period is still very active, very real, very necessary.

It’s a doubly somber time for the NBA, since the league is also coming to grips with the Jan. 1 death of Commissioner Emeritus David Stern — the person credited for taking a fledgling league and turning it into one of the planet’s most powerful sports brands, a multi-billion-dollar entity with a reach that touches nearly every outpost on earth. Stern was remembered as well at the Legends Brunch, and Silver drew a parallel between Bryant and his former boss.

Video captured by a Glendale, California, resident appears to show the helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and six other passengers circling above Glendale half an hour before the fatal crash. David Lyudnirsky, who lives below the known flight path of the helicopter, said he started filming because of the noise of the chopper circling above his house.

“Just as a reminder: Who more embodies the spirit of All-Star than Kobe? … He always played hard. He didn’t care if it was an All-Star game,” Silver said. “And I think that’s what he and David had in common. They always competed. They believed in the power of sports. They believed in winning and they believed it was necessary to always give their all. And I think that’s why their losses have resonated with so many people around the world.”

Magic Johnson — like Bryant, a Los Angeles Lakers legend — had been hired two years ago to introduce Bryant at the Legends Brunch, the one that Bryant couldn’t attend because his daughter had a game that morning.

On Sunday, Johnson finally got his chance to speak at the event and pay tribute to Bryant. He told the story about how, before Bryant was drafted in 1996, Jerry West called him to say that he had seen the greatest draft workout that he could recall.

He was speaking of Bryant’s workout.

“And I said, ‘Really,'” said Johnson, who also paid tribute to Stern and Bryant at United Center before Sunday’s game by addressing fans. “He said, ‘Yes, this guy named Kobe Bryant. Just was incredible in his workout and we’re going to do everything we can to draft him.”

The rest is history. Bryant came to the Lakers in a draft-night trade and played there for 20 years, winning five titles. Johnson said he was quickly impressed with Bryant’s work ethic, how he would work for two hours before practice and then go through another two-hour session with the team.

“That’s who Kobe Bryant was,” Johnson said. “He was always thinking about ‘How can I get better? How can I lead my team to victory?’ And when you think about him scoring 81 points in a game, only second to Wilt Chamberlain, and then five NBA championships, and then to score 60 points in his last game — that was probably the greatest thing I’ve ever seen from any athlete. He said, ‘Hey, I’m going to go out Mamba-style.'”

The brunch paid tribute this year to four individuals: USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo received the Lifetime Achievement award, newly retired three-time NBA champion and Chicago native Dwyane Wade received the Community Ambassador award, retired WNBA player and another Chicago native Cappie Pondexter was the Hometown Hero recipient, and longtime Chicago Bulls star and six-time NBA champion Scottie Pippen was the Legend of the Year.

Landmarks across the country lit up purple and gold, the colors of the Los Angeles Lakers, to remember Kobe Bryant. A helicopter crash killed Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others on Sunday.

Pippen was at his Los Angeles home when he got the news on Jan. 26 about Bryant.

“It was a weird morning,” Pippen said. “And I’m still today regretting that I didn’t get a chance to tell Kobe Bryant how great he really was.”

JJ Watt Marries Pro Soccer Player Kealia Ohai in the Bahamas – NBC4 Washington

J.J. Watt is officially off-the-market, y’all!

The Houston Texans defensive end has a lot to celebrate, especially now that he’s married to pro soccer player, Kealia Ohai.

On Saturday, the two lovebirds tied the knot in a romantic ceremony in the Bahamas. For their destination wedding, many of the pair’s nearest and dearest were in attendance.

In fact, North Carolina Courage and USWNT star Crystal Dunn took to social media to show off her friend’s elegant bridal gown.

In the photo, the 28-year-old soccer star looks picture-perfect in a mermaid-style wedding dress.

And instead of wearing a typical strapless design, Kealia opted for a jewel-encrusted spaghetti strap piece, which featured a fully beaded and intricately embroidered bodice. Her tulle bottom appeared to be decked out in glitzy fabric and sequins.

While the newlyweds have yet to share details about their wedding celebration, the two certainly enjoyed their tropical getaway days leading up to their big day.

J.J. Watt Is Engaged to Pro Soccer Player Kealia Ohai

“my valentine now and forever,” the NFL star captioned an Instagram post, alongside a photo of him holding onto his soccer star.

The two appeared to be soaking up the sun on a yacht, a day before they exchanged their vows.

The news of their wedding comes less than a year after they got engaged.

Back in May, Watt got down on one knee and popped the big question. “I’m the luckiest man in the world,” he wrote after announcing the happy news.

“Still can’t believe I get to be with you forever,” Ohai shared on Instagram with a photo of the magical moment her beau proposed. “I love you.”

The couple had been dating for three years, before taking their romance to the next level. Now, they’re husband and wife.

Congrats to the newlyweds!

‘Sonic’ Speeds to $57M Debut; ‘Parasite’ Sees Big Oscar Bump – NBC4 Washington

The redesigned “Sonic the Hedgehog” showed plenty of teeth at the box office, speeding to a $57 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday, while “Parasite” saw one of the largest post-Oscars bumps in years following its best picture win.

Paramount Pictures’ “Sonic the Hedgehog” came in well above expectations, especially for a movie that just months ago was a laughing stock. After its first trailer was greeted with ridicule on social media last year, “Sonic” was postponed three months to give its title character a design overhaul — including fixing Sonic’s eerily human teeth.

The makeover worked and audiences responded by making “Sonic the Hedgehog” the weekend’s top film and the highest-grossing opening for a video game adaptation, not accounting for inflation. For Paramount, it’s a welcome success following misfires such as “Gemini Man” and “Terminator: Dark Fate.” The studio estimates “Sonic” will gross $68 million over the four-day Presidents Day holiday weekend.

“If you don’t listen to your customer, and this goes for any business, then you’re going to fail,” said Chris Aronson, distribution chief for Paramount. “We retooled Sonic in a way that was obviously very satisfying for the fans and they were very forgiving. Now that they’ve seen the movie, they love the movie. It all worked out.”

The Sega video game adaptation, directed by Jeff Fowler, drew decent reviews (63% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and an A CinemaScore from moviegoers. The $87 million production co-stars Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik with Ben Schwartz supplying Sonic’s voice.

Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” had its biggest weekend in its 19th week of release. Neon put “Parasite” into its widest release yet (2,001 theaters) following its historic win at the Oscars. (“Parasite” was the first non-English-language film to win best picture in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards.) And despite the film already being available for weeks on digital platforms and on DVD, its $5.5 million weekend is the largest Oscars bump for a best-picture winner since “Gladiator” in 2001.

Last week’s opening of “Birds of Prey” followed up its limp debut by sliding to second with $17.1 million. Following its disappointing opening, some theaters retitled the movie “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey,” instead of “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).”

It was a busy weekend in theaters, with a handful of other new releases — “The Photograph,” “Fantasy Island,” “Downhill” — seeking to capitalize on both Valentine’s Day on Friday and Presidents Day on Monday.

“Fantasy Island,” the Blumhouse horror remake of the ‘70s TV show, fared the best, collecting $12.4 million in ticket sales despite terrible reviews. Sony Pictures handled the release of the low-budget, PG-13 film, which earned just a 9% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Universal Pictures “The Photograph,” a romance starring Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield and produced by Will Packer (“Girls Trip,” “Ride Along”), opened with $12.2 million. The film, written and directed by Stella Meghie, cost $15 million to make.

“Downhill,” from Disney’s Fox Searchlight Pictures, debuted with $4.7 million, a modest start for a film starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell. A remake of the acclaimed Swedish film “Force Majeure” by Ruben Östlund, “Downhill” didn’t do great with critics but fared even worse with audiences. They gave it a D CinemaScore.

Neon followed up its “Parasite” Oscar win with the Valentine’s Day release of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” one of 2019’s most acclaimed films. Following a one-week qualifying run in December, Celine Sciamma’s French period romance opened in 22 theaters with a strong per-theater average of about $20,000.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.

1. “Sonic the Hedgehog,” $57 million ($44.3 million international).

2. “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey,” $17.1 million ($23 million international).

3. “Fantasy Island,” $12.4 million ($7.6 million international).

4. “The Photograph,” $12.3 million.

5. “Bad Boys for Life,” $11.3 million ($11.1 million international).

6. “1917,” $8.1 million ($6.4 million international).

7. “Jumanji: The Next Level,” $5.7 million ($1.9 million international).

8. “Parasite,” $5.5 million.

9. “Dolittle,” $5.1 million ($8.8 million international).

10. “Downhill,” $4.7 million.
