KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC) — Police say they shot and killed a person said to be mentally ill who had attacked residents of the southern Grenadine island of Canouan on Sunday.

They said Dale Dabreo had also attacked officers with a knife and a cutlass when they tried to intervene.

He was taken to the Canouan Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

This is the second fatal police shooting of a mentally ill person within eight months.

Last August, police shot Stilson Harold in the leg after he reportedly attacked them when they responded to a report from his son, Stilson Harold Jnr, that he had stabbed him in the neck with a piece of steel.

The older Harold was taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where he bled to death. Police said he had prevented emergency health care workers from treating the wound.
