‘Use conflict resolution instead of resorting to violence’

THE National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) yesterday urged parents, students and the general public to use the necessary conflict resolution mechanisms in handling problems and disputes, instead of resorting to violence.

“We call upon our parents, PTAs and schools to do all we possibly can to ensure that we collectively provide the necessary support and guidance to our parents and children on the value of life, property, good conduct and education. We must do all that we can as a society to reduce the levels of crime in our beloved country and instead change our focus to influence greatness among our people,” said the NPTAJ.

The call comes in the wake of this week’s murder of security guard Clifton Lumbley, who was killed while on duty at the Grange Hill High School in Westmoreland.

“The NPTAJ extends condolences to the family, school community and friends on the recent murder of Mr Lumbley, who was described as a man for all seasons and one who was well-loved. The pain of this loss is unbearable at best,” the association said in a release yesterday.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are even more disturbing as it now appears to have involved students of the school. Imagine how the parents and families of those students must feel. We condemn the killing and expect that all efforts will be made to bring the perpetrators to justice and [we] encourage all witnesses to step forward and assist the police in its investigations,” said the NPTAJ.

The school has since made changes to its security arrangements.

According to the NPTAJ, a team from Region 4 will be visiting the family and “we stand ready to lend support”.

At the same time, it said that it remains focused on the education of “our children and continues to encourage parents to be involved, as our motto says, ‘Involved parents = better students’.”
