KINGSTON, Jamaica — Constituents and Jamaicans at large are now awaiting the outcome of today’s by-election, following the closure of polling stations in Portland Eastern at 5:00 pm today.

The People’s National Party (PNP) candidate Damon Crawford is up against the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Ann-Marie Vaz.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) reported a 47 per cent voter turnout between 7:00 am and 3:00 pm.

The 17,185 electors who cast their ballots in that period are in comparison to the 15,110 (43.93 per cent) who voted in 2016.

The exercise became necessary following the murder of PNP MP Dr Lynvale Bloomfied in February.

Portland Eastern was last represented by a JLP MP in 1980 and is considered a PNP safe seat.

However, recent polls have pointed to Vaz as the favourite to win, with a 10 per cent lead over her opponent, Crawford.

The result of the poll should be available shortly after 8:00 pm.
