A month after the police announced that there could be a baby-stealing ring operating in the country, they have made an about-turn.

The Kingston Western police revealed the possibility last month, after a day-old baby boy who was abducted from Victoria Jubilee Hospital on January 9 was allegedly found in Peta-Gay Ffrench’s custody.

However, the police said Tuesday that after further investigations, there is no evidence of a baby-stealing ring.

The abducted baby was recovered when Ffrench attempted to register him at the Registrar General’s Department in Twickenham Park, St Catherine, on February 5.

On Tuesday, Inspector Phillip Dodd told the Jamaica Observer that investigations revealed that some of the information given to them by Ffrench was not true.

He explained that investigation revealed that Ffrench, who is from Harkers Hall in St Catherine, did not conspire with medical practitioners to steal the baby.

Alluding to a conspiracy last month, Dodd had said the police would be taking additional statements from hospital workers.

However, Dodd told the Observer Tuesday that the police were unable to collect the statements.

He explained that individuals have been “inadvertently busy”.

Ffrench, 27, who has been deemed fit to plea following a psychiatric evaluation, is expected to reappear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court today.
