A new Member of Parliament is to be elected in Portland Eastern on April 4, instead of March 25 as was previously announced, to fill the vacancy created by the death of Dr Lynvale Bloomfield last month.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the new date in a press release yesterday.

Nomination Day will now be on Friday, March 15, 2019.

According to the statement, the decision was reached after further consideration and consultation.

“This announcement supersedes that made on Friday, March 1, 2019, to take into account the public holiday of Ash Wednesday, which falls on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, and which is an ‘excluded day’ for the purpose of section 21 (1A) of the Representation of the People Act, which provides that the day appointed for Nomination Day shall be at least five clear days after the announcement of an election,” the release said.
