One man was shot dead and another injured yesterday morning in Cassava Piece, a community in upper St Andrew that is plagued by intermittent violence.

Up to press time , the deceased man was only identified as Danie.

The Jamaica Observer was told that at approximately 10:30 am the men were among a group of people when a gunman walked up to them and opened fire. The men were taken to hospital where Danie succumbed to his injuries.

When the Observer visited the community yesterday morning, residents looked on as police secured the crime scene where a blood trail was visible in the vicinity of a bridge spanning a gully.

A frustrated resident, who said he has been living on the bank of the gully for over 50 years, expressed dissatisfaction with the crime rate.

“It will never stop. One thing mi can tell the Government is, stop carry man go a jail. Start hang back people and dem will stop kill people,” he said.

“Gunman no waan dead, enuh,” he reasoned.

Insisting that the death penalty will combat crime, the senior citizen said: “Mi tiad a it. The PNP (People’s National Party) and the JLP (Jamaica Labour Party) fi come together and hang dem.”

The St Andrew North police are investigating.
