MONTEGO BAY, St James — Associate General Secretary of the Jamaica Baptist Union (JBU) Reverend Merlyn Hyde Riley has joined the hot button topic of abortion, arguing that it is a sensitive issue which is to be mulled over if the expectant mother’s life is at risk.

“…And the approach of compassion is integral to Jesus’s approach to treating with each situation. So, therefore, in certain cases such as a case where a mother’s life is at risk, one would have to contemplate seriously what is the best course of action and so we would not simply say we are pro-life or we are not pro-life. Because it is, in our view, not simply a black and white situation,” Reverend Hyde-Riley remarked.

But she was quick to point out that the JBU strongly embraces the virtue of life.

“The Jamaica Baptist Union affirms human life and we would not treat without great care and regard human life in all its forms,” she declared.

She was responding to a question on the JBU’s position on abortion at the media launch of the Jamaica Baptist Union Assembly 2019, to be held in Montego Bay between February 20 and 24. The launch was held at the Grand-A-View Restaurant & Event Place in Montego Bay, St James, last week.

One highlight of Assembly 2019 will be the hosting of a community partnership fair, which aims to give visibility to the theme of partnership by bringing together several agencies in delivering a wide range of services, at no cost, to the people of Montego Bay, especially those who are marginalised and dispossessed.

The partnership fair will be held on Friday, February 22 from 10:00am, 5:00 pm, at Jarrett Park.

“This will include a wide range of medical, educational, social and economic services as we make room for agencies such as the Passport and Immigration Agency, HEART Trust/NTA, National Insurance Scheme, Tax Administration Jamaica, the PMI, among many others. We should have over 20 agencies/organisations present,” Reverend Hyde Riley said.

“We will wrap up the partnership fair with a grand gospel celebration in the evening as Kevin Downswell and Jabez take the curtains down on the events of the day.”
