A man who accused of tricking a police constable into believing that he was selling a car and collected $650,000 is scheduled to return to the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on February 1, after he was remanded last Friday.

Charged with obtaining money by false pretence is 34-year-old Donahue Beckford of St Catherine.

According to allegations, on September 28 last year the accused pretended that he was the owner of 2007 Honda Stream motor car and offered it for sale to the complainant for $850,000.

The policeman reportedly agreed to buy the car and paid over a total of $650,000 to the accused. However, the constable later became suspicious about the whereabouts of the vehicle and after being given the run-around he reported the matter to the police.

Beckford was subsequently arrested and charged.

When the accused first appeared in court with his attorney last Thursday he promised to return the complainant’s money to him the following day. But on Friday when he returned to court, he changed his lawyer and indicated that he had never promised to return the money and was further remanded.
