GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – The director of a private school remained hospitalised yesterday after he was shot outside his home late Sunday night hours after hosting an emergency meeting to discuss a warning that had been posted on the social media network, Facebook, threatening the lives of students.

“We once again assure you that our primary concern is for our students and staff and we will ensure that adequate measures are put in place,” the School of Nations said in a statement after Dr Brian O’ Toole was shot after attending a dinner with a visiting British scholar..

“We are relieved to inform everyone that Dr O’Toole is stable and well,” the statement said.

O’Toole is reported to have been shot in both hands by the gunman as he entered his home.

“In light of recent unfortunate events we wish to advise that our school will be closed today (yesterday) as we assess our current security measures with an objective to ensuring that our students, staff and premises are safe and secured,” the school added.

On Sunday, O’Toole met with parents of the students attending the private school after a Facebook post surfaced earlier in the day with a person threatening to open fire on students of the school.

Last Friday, a student was expelled after posting a Whatsapp message, threatening to ‘shoot-up’ the school. The student had said he was just joking, but that did not save him.

Media reports said that the unidentified student recently returned to Guyana after living in the United States for a few years.

Police said they are investigating both incidents.
