Attorney-at-law Peta-Kaye Chin has been appointed Honorary Consul of The Philippines in Jamaica.

Confirmation came late last year from the Embassy of the Philipines in Washington DC, which has oversight responsibility for operartions in Jamaica.

The new Honorary Consul succeeds her father, businessman Everoy Hugo Chin, who served in that capacity for a decade before retiring last year.

“We are looking forward to further expanding the Philippines’ relations with Jamaica through the appointment of Ms Chin. We are confident that her background and experience with the Filipino community will convey stronger ties with our kababayans and their families living and working in Jamaica,” said Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States Jose Manuel G Romualdez, in a statement.

For her part, Chin expressed delight at the appointment: “I am very happy to have been appointed Honorary Consul of the Philippines in Jamaica. I was inspired by my father, being the previous Honorary Consul for the Filipinos. I have admired the culture and work ethic of the Filipino community in Jamaica and I am proud to be a part of the community, playing the role of official diplomatic representative.

“The Filipinos are some of the most decent, law-abiding citizens in Jamaica, and I look forward to a continued fruitful relationship. People often ask me why the Philippines, and I tell them that it’s largely because of my father and his love and care for the Filipino community. My long exposure to the community, having been all over with my father at various events involving the Filipinos, has prepared me well for this new and important assignment.

“There was a need for the role to be filled, and with my legal background I will try to ensure that the interests of the Filipinos are looked after and are well served. I developed a hunger to serve the Filipino community having watched my father do likewise for several years,” Chin stated.

There are approximately 200 Filipino nationals in Jamaica, most of them located in the Corporate Area.

Chin operates from her offices at 104 Constant Spring Road in St Andrew.
