KINGSTON, Jamaica — Public health experts will convene at the Spanish Court Hotel in St Andrew next Friday to discuss the role that sugary drinks and unhealthy foods play in obesity and whether fat calories are more damaging.

The health officials are expected to outline the scientific evidence linking the contribution of excess salt, sugars, fats, ultra-processed foods and their impact on weight management and obesity, which increases the risk of developing chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, some forms of cancer and diabetes.

Dr Frank Hu from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School will deliver a keynote address and Dr Lisa Powell from the University of Illinois in Chicago will be a featured speaker.

The forum, which is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am, will also include a panel discussion made up of Jamaican and international experts, including representatives from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), University of West Indies (UWI), Caribbean Institute for Health Research, and the University of Technology, who will discuss causes of obesity and how fiscal policies have been effective in promoting healthy behaviour changes.

The forum is being co-sponsored by the Heart Foundation of Jamaica and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in partnership with the Ministry of Health Jamaica, the Association of Consultant Physicians of Jamaica, Caribbean Institute for Health Research (UWI) and JamaicaMoves.
